HEAVY LOSS IN FIRE.

TILFORD ACADEMY AT VINTON SERIOUSLY DAMAGED BY FIRE AND WATER.

FIRE STARTED FROM STOVE.

WAS BURNING FIERCELY WHEN FIRST DISCOVERED -- LOSS AND INSURANCE UNKNOWN.

Vinton, Feb. 7. -- A fire alarm about 4 p.m. yesterday called the department to Tilford academy in South Vinton and only their timely arrival saved the ladies' hall from total destruction. As it was, the building was flooded with water and a part of the top floor was gutted by the fire. The building in a frame one, three stories in height. The origin seems to have been from a stove in either the second or third floor in a room near the northeast corner. There was no one in that part of the building and the fire evidently had been burning for some time when discovered by one of the students, as it had eaten its way entirely through the north outside wall and was burning fiercely. After a half hour of hard work, however, the department succeded in getting the blaze under control.
No estimate of the damage has been made, but it will be especially heavy on account of the large quantity of water it was necessary to use. The amount of insurance carried is unknown at this time, but in any event it will be a heavy loss to Prof. TOBIN.
