TWENTY INJURED IN CRASH.

Lake Erie Excursion Train Strikes Freight at Laporte Crossing.

LAPORTE, Ind., Oct. 3 – Twenty persons were injured, six severely, when a Lake Erie & Western excursion train from Indianapolis crashed into a Lake Shore freight train on a siding here early this morning. The freight crew was switching and it is said no signals were displayed. The injured are: MRS. ESTA WARD, Los Angeles, Cal.; MRS. CHARLES MOORE, Michigan City; CHARLES MOORE, Michigan City; MISS LONG, Michigan City; MRS. L.B. ROEMPAGE, Laporte; H.J. STOWELL, Laporte; MISS MARY CHENEY, Michigan City; MISS CARSTEN, Michigan City; CONDUCTOR GEORGE TEEPLE; Indianapolis; J.A. DAVIS, Laporte; MICHAEL BASSETT, Peru, fireman; LOUIS BETRIPLE, brakeman; EDWARD WILLIAMS, brakeman, Indianapolis; NEAL BROOKS, Grand Rapids; and ANDREW GROSSEN, Holland Mich. Engineer Bassett of the excursion train says he was but fifty feet away when he saw the cut of freight cars and was unable to stop. He applied the emergency brakes, but the engine plowed half its way through a loaded freight car. His fireman was thrown out of the cab by the impact and he crawled out of the cab window after the accident. Two tramps riding on the baggage car were rescued with difficulty. None of the coaches left the track.
