Jessup's Station, IN Train Wreck, Jan 1893
An Engineer and Fireman Roasted to Death Under Their Locomotive.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Jan. 14, -- A serious wreck occurred about fifteen miles north of this city yesterday at noon on the Minshall coal branch of the Vandalia railroad. An engine hauling seven coal cars and a caboose jumped the track at the switch connection at Jessup’s station. The engine ran fifteen feet clear of the rails, buried its front end in an embankment and turned over, instantly killing GEORGE SMITH, engineer, and WILLIAM WARREN, fireman. Both men were imprisoned under the fire box and received the full force of escaping steam and coal cinders, which burned their faces beyond recognition. The engine was thrown into such a position as to leave her driving-wheels extended in the air, and kept in motion until the steam ran out. The accident was caused by the driving-wheels striking the stub end of a switch rail. Smith leaves a wife and three children. Warren was unmarried.
