Marion, IN Train Derails, Sep 1911

MEAT TRAIN GOES IN DITCH; TWO MEN BADLY INJURED.

ENGINE TRUCK BECOMES DERAILED AT SWITCH IN MARION, CAUSING BAD WRECK AND HEAVY LOSS.

Marion, Ind., Sept. 21. -- Fireman GEORGE BERGER was perhaps fatally injured and Engineer PAUL STEPPICK seriously hurt when the second section of the Clover Leaf freight train, No. 42, an Armour meat train, was wrecked in this city this morning. Ten cars and two engines were demolished. The wreck was caused by a pony truck of the first engine becoming derailed at a frog, the locomotive plunging down a fifteen-foot embankment. BERGER and STEPPICK, both of whom reside at Delphos, O., were in the first engine.
BERGER'S jaw, nose and right ankle were fractured, and he suffered serious internal injuries. STEPPICK'S right elbow was fractured and he sustained ugly injuries to his body, together with a serious nervous shock. C. E. DREWERY, engineer, of Frankfort, and E. J. DASH, fireman, of Delphos, O., who were in the second engine, escaped with slight injuries.
BERGER and STEPPICK are under treatment at the Grant County Hospital. The wreck has not been cleared, although the track is in use. The railway company will suffer an enormous loss, in view of the fact that ten cars and two engines were destroyed, as well as the contents of the cars.
