Gary, Ind., Feb. 25. -- MISS HATTIE STEVENS and MISS CHARLOTTE CHESNES, telephone girls in the local exchange, were overcome by smoke during a fire which destroyed the Ohio building, a three-story structure, and for a time threatened other structures. The girls remained at their switchboards in the exchange adjoining the Ohio building until they fell unconscious.
The fire started in the basement of the building occupied by offices, a poolroom and the Masonic lodgeroom, and firemen headed by Chief FEELEY fought the flames until they were almost exhausted.
The loss will reach $75,000.
