GREAT FIRE IN LAFAYETTE---A BUSINESS BLOCK BURNED DOWN---LOSSES OF THE OWNERS.

LAFAYETTE, February 5--- A fire occurred here this morning between two and three o'clock, which resulted in the entire destruction of the interior of the block known as Spencer's building, located on the east side of the Public Square. The fire originated in the cellar of Edward Marvin's auction and commission house, and in spite of the exertions of the firemen, every dollars worth of goods in Marvin's establishment was destroyed. The three other store rooms were occupied by L. R. Brown, druggist; H. Strauss clothing merchant; and W. S. Gregory, stove and hardware dealer. Nearly all of the goods on the first floor owned by these gentlemen were removed to a place of safety, but some of them in a damaged condition. The stores were owned by Israel Spence, the heirs of William H. Davis, Dr. Wilson, and W. L. Gregory, and were each insured for $3,000. Mr. Brown will lose about $4,000 over and above the insurance. Marvin about $4,000; Strauss and Gregory it is thought, will about be protected by their insurance. The entire loss is estimated at from $40,000 to $50,000. The entire insurance is $20,500. The fire was evidently the work of an incendiary.

A BUSINESS BLOCK BURNED DOWN.

LAFAYETTE, February 5.---About two o'clock this morning a fire was discovered in the cellar of the storeroom occupied by C. E. Marvin as an auction room in Spencer block, on Fourth street, of this city, which resulted in the destruction of the whole block. The principal sufferers by the fire are; W. I. Gregory, hardware and stove dealer; C. E. Marvin, auctioneer; L. R. Brown, druggist; Henry Strauss, clothing store, and Israel Spencer, owner of a part of the block. The origin of the fire is not known. The total loss is estimated at $50,000.
