QUEER INDIANA TRAIN WRECK.

Locomotives So Interlocked in a Collision as to be Almost Inseparable.

Special to the New York Times.

BROOKFIELD, Ind., Oct. 24.--- A local freight, west-bound, yesterday morning backed into a siding to allow fast freight No. 90 to pass. The operator neglected to close the switch and the fast freight, traveling thirty miles an hour, dashed into the open switch. The crews of both the trains jumped. Fireman Celtz of the fast train was perhaps fatally injured.

The impact of the collision was so severe as to drive the tender of the motionless train off its trucks, and , telescoping a cattle car loaded with coal, it rested half on top of the third car. Of the fast freight, a car loaded with hogs was telescoped by one loaded with shelled corn, and the animals not killed in the collision were smothered in an avalanche of corn.

The locomotives, neither of which left the track, are so interlocked that dynamite will be required to seperate them.

The New York Times, New York, NY 25 Oct 1899
