Hammond, IN Train Wreck, Aug 1902
FATAL WRECK ON THE MONON.
One Dead, Four Injured in a Railroad Collision Near Hammond, Indiana.
Chicago, Aug. 18. -- Carrying 300 excursionists on their homeward journey a Monon passenger train crashed into a heavy Erie freight early yesterday morning near Hammond, Ind., killing one man, probably fatally injuring his brother, and wounding three others.
All the excursionists escaped.
So great was the force of the impact the passengers, most of whom had been asleep, were thrown into a panic. Women screamed and fainted, and it is said the men fought each other in their endeavor to escape.
Demolishing the caboose, the engine turned diagonally across the rails and struck a Monon freight train which was standing on an adjoining track. To add to the excitement, the wreckage caught fire, entailing great loss to the two railroads, and then while rescuers were at work the wrecked engine exploded, increasing the panic, and many more narrowly escaped injury.
FARRIS, GEORGE, 21 years old, Cave City, Ky.; employed by Latrobe Steel company, Melrose, Ill., was killed.
The injured were: FARRIS, DANIEL E., 28 years old, Millet, Mich.; telegraph operator on the Erie railway, ribs broken and injured internally, taken to St. Margaret's hospital, probably will die.
KLINE, F. E., Indianapolis, Monon engineer; foot crushed and body injured, taken to St. Margaret's hospital.
LEWIS, FRANK, Indianapolis, Monon fireman; leg broken and injured internally; taken to Hammond hospital.
MARSHALL, SAMUEL R., Cincinnati, brakeman on Erie road; cut above head, arms and legs curshed[sic]; taken to St. Margaret's hospital.
