Hammond Man Killed In Fall At Inland Mill

Two hours after he returned to his position as a boiler washer at the Inland Steel yesterday Governor Ruth, 25, of 707 Sibley Street, Hammond, fell from a locomotive and was fatally injured. He had been unable to work for five weeks because of the Inland strike.

Ruth was taken to St. Catherine’s hospital in Indiana Harbor where he died about 8 o’clock last night. He had suffered a fractured pelvis and other injuries.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian, mother, Mrs. Clara Klaver; step-father, Henry Klaver; two sisters, Josephine Strachan of California and Adeline Lessieg of Muskogee, Okla.; and four brothers, Percy of Texas, Reuben of Lawrenceville, Ill., and Frank and Hubert of Hammond.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Snyder funeral home in Hammond. Interment will follow at Elmwood cemetery. Rev. Paul Schaeffer and Capt. Harry Strissell of the Salvation Army will conduct the services. The body may be viewed at the funeral home.

Ruth and his wife were married last May 29. She is the former Lillian Chilow.
