Clinton, In., Clinton Hotel Fire. Mar. 1956

Fire Destroys the four-story Clinton Hotel Wednesday, but all 12 guests, many barefoot and in nightclothes, were rescued.
Some of the guests were removed from the second and third floors through windows because of the dense smoke.

The fire, which caused damage estimated unofficially at $250,000 started in the rear of a drug store and bus station on the first floor of the 70-room hotel. An adjoining building suffered slight damage.

Firemen used masks to save medical books from the office of Dr. J.M. KERCHAVEL.

The Indiana Bell Telephone Co. office in the hotel was destroyed, along with a tavern, the doctor’s office, a barber shop and the drug store and bus station. Damaged in the other buildings were another drug store, a florist shop and a coffee shop.

Telephone service was not disrupted since the exchange is located in a building three blocks from the hotel.
Firemen from Terre Haute, Rockville, Montezuma anad Clinton Township helped fight the fire.
