Big Windstorm Hits Cass County

I.O.O.F. Cottage At Lake Cicott Badly Wrecked

Strips of Corn in County Laid Low as Result of Wind

Window Panes Are Broken In Places

Cass county was given a taste of a Kansas cyclone in a small way yesterday afternoon between the hours of 2 and 3 o’clock, and as a result in sections of the county corn was laid flat, trees blown down, telephone poles broken off, while in Lake Cicott the I.O.O.F. Canton cottage was badly wrecked, the south side being blown in and the roof taken off, while the debris was scattered around for a distance of 300 feet.

After a morning of extremely sultry heat, black clouds began forming in the east about 1 o’clock and from Logansport thunder could be heard. However, there was no wind and no rain in Logansport.

Hits Only in Strips

While there was no effects of the storm at Walton, east of the town about four miles, corn was blown down and trees broken off, while the panes of glass in houses were reported broken. The storm apparently jumped from there to the river, for at Pottowattomia Point and at Miami Bend the wind was so severe it raised the boats out of the river, blew down tents, and uprooted trees nearby. North in Fulton County, corn was laid in a half mile strip, while north of Royal Center it hit again and damaged the crops badly.

Mrs. S.E. Snyder, living in East Market Street, and daughter Genevieve, had narrow escapes from serious injuries when the wind tore their tent in which they were staying at Lake Cicott. The daughter, age thirteen, was bruised when the tent pole struck her, and Mrs. Snyder fell over the cliff when the wind wrenched the ropes of the tent from her grasp.

Lifts Cement Posts

Heavy cement posts attached the porch of the Canton building were carried several rods by the storm, while cooking utensils were scattered over a distance of three hundred feet. A sugar bowl lid was lifted from the bowl and found several rods away.

No one was in the building at the time. A party of members go there this morning accompanied by Fred A. Duffey, whose agency carried the cyclone insurance on the cottage, and make arrangements for rebuilding.

The only effect the storm had on Logansport was a cooling of the atmosphere.

At Anoka there was a hard wind, but no especial damage was done. A straw pile, near there was struck.

There was no wind at Galveston, but a freak storm was reported in Kokomo with little or no damage.
