St. Anthony, IN Train - Auto Wreck, Aug 1930

Almost Wiped Out By Wreck

Party on Way to Farm Near St. Anthony, Ind. For Visit

Track View Obstructed

Huntingburg, Ind., Aug. 24. (AP)-Six persons were killed and three others were injured, two perhaps fatally, late today when the automobile in which they rode was struck by a freight train at a crossing near St. Anthony, ten miles east of here.

The nine persons were all related, and live at St. Anthony.

The dead are:
MRS. JOHN BLEKER, 58.
WILLIAM J. HEDDINGER, 37, driver of the car.
IRENE HEDDINGER, 15.
THEODORE HEDDINGER, 12.
BERNICE BIEKER, 10.
LOLA BIEKER, 8.

The injured are:
Mrs. William J. Heddinger, 34, fractured skull and internal injuries and perhaps fatally wounded.
Marie Bieker, age 3, internally hurt, but expected to recover.

Making Farm Trip

Heddinger, a merchant of St. Anthony, had started with the members of his family and the Biekers, relatives, to visit his farm near the village, and drove on the tracks on the Louisville division of the Southern railway in front of the oncoming freight. A string of box cars extending nearly a mile along a siding obscured his view of the track.

Wreckage of the car, the nine persons inside, was carried by the freight, locomotive several hundred feet along the right-of-way before being tossed into the ditch. The bodies were strewn about and the automobile completely demolished.

The injured were taken to St. Mary’s hospital at Evansville.
