Lightning Damages Property.
One Barn Burned and Several Houses Hit at Terre Haute.
Terre Haute, Ind., July 7.—The heaviest rain of record fell in Terre Haute today, Flooding cellars and basements and causing damage to foundations. The Weather Bureau reported a fall of 3.70 inches. Lightning burned one large barn and damaged business and residence property. Hundreds of motor cars were put out of commission by the downpour which attained the volume of a cloudburst at 5:30 o’clock.
The basement retaining wall of the Temple laundry plant collapsed into the engine room. A car of coal which was on a sidetrack was precipitated into the cellar. Electric power was shut off in many parts of the city.
The sudden rise of Big and Little Sugar Creeks caused by the heavy rain drove more than a score of families near West Terre Haute from their homes. The village of Toad Hop is under five feet of water and all crops in the low lands along the creeks have been destroyed. Wheat in the shock in several fields has been swept away and live stock has been drowned.
