Whole Town Out to Fight Large Smithton Fire
Home of Elmer Thompson Badly Damaged During Noon Hour Tuesday-Contents Saved.
Intense excitement prevailed in Smithton during the noon hour Tuesday when fire broke out on the roof of the frame dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Thompson.
Sparks from a chimney evidently set fire to the shingles. Due to the high wind the flames spread rapidly and had gained considerable headway before discovered. As soon as the fire was detected the alarm was spread by ringing the fire and church bells. Nearly everybody in town hurried to the scene to lend what help they could.
While one detachment removed the contents of the house the other formed a bucked brigade. Some thought there was no chance of saving any part of the structure, but heroic work resulted in the extinguishing of the blaze after about two-thirds of the roof land been consumed. Part of the interior also was burned and water did some damage. Only through the combined efforts of courageous volunteer fire fighters was any was any part of the house saved.
