Plane Hits House, Dozen Passengers Escape Narrowly
Six Taken to Hospital, but None Is Believed to Be Injured Fatally
CHICAGO, Ill., May 31 (UP). - Twelve passengers aboard a Transcontinental & Western Air Liner from New York narrowly escaped death Sunday night when the big ship nearly crashed on the roof of a house as it made a forced landing half mile from Municipal Airport.
Witnesses said the plane was skimming low over trees near the house of Joseph E. Marlett when the right wing struck the roof of the house, tearing a part of it away.
After striking the house, the plane proceeded to a vacant lot where it set down. The propeller was shoved back into the ship's nose, the left engine was almost completely demolished and a portion of the right wing was torn off. The plane apparently was circling about the airport preparatory to landing.
Those taken to a hospital were George House, copilot; Grace J. Davidson, stewardess; Daniel Mahoney, Wesley Smith, Maurice Haas and Miss Louise Ziolkowski, passengers. Extent of their injuries was not disclosed by the hospital, except for a brief announcement that none was considered fatally hurt.
