Mt. Vernon Cyclone, February 19, 1888
One of the victims, Josephine Sutton, (listed as Miss Josie Sitton/Sutton) was my great aunt. She was the daughter of John Taylor and Luvina Angline (Huff) Sutton, who lived in Mt. Vernon in 1888. February 19, 1888, as my grandfather, William N. Sutton, told the story, was not just her date of death, but was the day that she was to be married. (From the list of victims, I believe that her fiance was Joseph Shew). Grandpa said that Josie and her fiance were standing on the church steps, when a 2x4 from a nearby porch was torn loose and hit them both in the head killing them instantly. I have not had any luck in finding an application for her marriage from the Mt. Vernon Courthouse. Josephine was 18 years old at the time of her death.
