TOWN OF OKAW DESTROYED
Chicago, May 15, 1858
EDITORS TIMES---GENTLEMEN: Yesterday, (Friday) the thriving town of Okaw, on the Chicago Branch of the Illinois Central Railroad, was visited by a fearful storm, between the hours of 2 and 3 o'clock P.M., demolishing two-thirds of the houses, unroofing the passenger house, and rent in pieces the hotel. While it lasted it was unsafe to be anywhere in the vicinity, as the broken timbers kept flying around in the midst of a perfect deluge. I am glad to inform you that no one was hurt, which, considering the fury of the wind, is looked upon as fortunated and providential.
