York, IL Tornado, Jun 1907 - Dead & Injured
TORNADO STRIKES TOWN.
York, Ill. June 8. - Three persons are dead and eight are probably fatally injured as the result of a tornado, which almost wiped out York and damaged Graysville, Ind., last night. The loss to property in York is $50,000. The damage to timber, fruit, and crops is $100,000.
The dead:
Henry Rook, blown sixty feet and struck by flying timbers.
Mrs. Lucinda Pinkerton, blown 700 feet into tree top.
Mrs. John Bostick, buried in ruins of her home.
Severely injured:
Clyde Scott.
B. F. Miller.
Mrs. B. F. Miller.
Mrs. S. F. Freeman.
Annabel Newman.
Mrs. Lydia Foster.
FAMILIES BURIED IN RUINS
The storm broke while most York people were at supper. Entire families were buried in the ruins of houses. The storm lasted less than four minutes. All outside communication was cut off until today.
The Methodist church was demolished. The proprietor of a saloon was hurled through the door into a hedge fifty feet away. Many horses and cattle were blown into the Wabash River and washed away.
Heavy damage was caused at Graysville, Ind., just east of York.
