Terrible Tornado in Illinois
Tampico, Whiteside, Ills., June 7.--A terrible tornado passed over this village last night, making a complete wreck of it, though, wonderful to say, no lives were lost, but a number of persons were injured, several severely. Twenty-one dwellings were totally destroyed, and every house in the town was more or less damaged. The most serious casualties are: Mrs. J. G. Gates, leg broken in two places; Maria Banes, jaw broken and seriously injured on the head. It is doubtful if she will recover. Another, Mrs. Gates was seriously injured; Mrs. Pearsons [sic - Piersol], badly injured. A number of others were injured. The amount of damage cannot be estimated yet. The people are hunting up and gathering together what little the storm has left them.
The tornado struck us at ten minutes after eleven, and was accompanied by rain and severe thunder and lightning. The storm came from the west and lasted but a few minutes.
