Madison, IL Train Accident, Jan 1909

CLOVER LEAF FIREMAN HURT.
Walter Casteuans of Greenup, fireman on Clover Leaf west bound passenger train No. 3, was hurt at the Madison yard, the division terminal, last night. He had been putting the machine away in the round house after a bridge engine took the train in and swung off the cab onto what he supposed was the floor of the round house. Instead he fell into the pit. It was supposed that his back was broken and he was placed on an extra east and brought to Edwardsville. Dr. H. T. Wharff, the company surgeon, examined him in the station here, and found that the blow had crushed in several of the man’s ribs near the backbone, inflicting an injury which made the fireman gasp with pain every time he drew a breath. His hurt was dressed and he was forwarded to his home on the first train. He is 30 years old and is married.
