Chicago, IL Fire, Oct 1857

Great Fire in Chicago.

We learn by indirect information from Chicago that they were yesterday morning visited by one of the most disastrous fires ever know in that city. As near as we can learn the fire commenced in South Water street, between Clark and Dearborn, and had consumed, at 10 A.M. yesterday, both the American and United States Express Co.’s offices, on Dearborn street, and several large stores on Lake street. Loss estimated about one million. We also learn that several lives were lost by the falling of the walls of D.B. Cooke & Co.’s book store.
