Quincy, IL Train Wreck, Sept 1879

TRAIN WRECKING.
On The Chicago, Burlington And Quincy.

QUINCY, ILL., Sept 16---The incoming passenger train on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Road, due here at 9:40 last night, was badly wrecked near Eubank's Station, seven miles from Quincy. The train was coming at an ordinary rate of speed, when a tie, placed across and fastened to the track, was encountered. The fireman, Mr. A. N. PEASE, a promising and steady young man, the son of Mr. Nat PEASE, one of the oldest and wealthiest citizens of Quincy, was instantly killed. James MCMILLIN, the engineer, was badly, if not dangerously, injured. Postal clerks PIERCE and DILLON were slightly injured. The latter will be laid up for several days from his bruises. The postal and baggage cars were badly wrecked and overturned. The baggage man, express messenger, and Frank ALLEN, a baggage shipper, were in the baggage car, and all received more or less bruises. The train was filled with passengers, none of whom were injured, as only the smoking coach left the track and partially turned over. Young PEASE chose this occupation soon after his young wife died, last spring, in the hope that it would divert his mind from his great loss. His family has the sympathy of the entire community.
