Freight Train Falls Through Bridge South of Alto Pass (Ill)---Fireman is Swept Away.

Alto Pass, Ill., July 5.---Engineer Rolla THORTON was killed and Engineer HENSON and Fireman WILLIS were injured when northbound Mobile & Ohio freight train No 32, a doubleheader, went through a bridge five miles south of this city, shortly after northbound passenger train No. 4 had passed in safety.

WILLIS fell between the engine and cars, but was carried from under the cars by the swift current and swept half a mile down stream. He is seriously injured.

The killed and injured are all from Murphysboro, Ill. The two engines pulling the freight passed over the bridge, but were derailed by falling cars behind them.

THORTON was crushed to death in his cab. Six cars fell into the creek. Traffic is tied up for the day between Murphysboro and Cairo except passenger trains, which are being diverted via the Illinois Central between these points.
