La Harpe, IL Train Wreck, Jun 1881
Two Freight Trains in Collision.
Chicago, June 8.- A dispatch from La Harpe, Ill., says: “Two freight trains on the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railroad came in collision yesterday morning one and a half miles east of Burnside, making the greatest wreck ever known on the Peoria Division. The west bound freight train- ISAAC FROST, engineer, and DANIEL SCOTT, conductor- was behind time and running wild. Both trains struck at full speed. Frost was bruised in jumping, and the brakeman, JOHN CRACHFIELD, was badly hurt. The mass of debris is 20 feet high, and one engine stands exactly perpendicular. Both engines and several cars are completely smashed to pieces. The loss is estimated at $50,000. It will take a day at least to clear the track.
