Fenton, IL Storm and Train Wreck, Aug 1902

Cloudburst in Illinois.

Sterling, Ill., Aug. 20.---A cloudburst near Fenton, 20 miles southwest of this city, destroyed the corn crop. Two miles of track on the Mendota branch of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad were washed out. A freight train ran into the washout and was ditched. GEORGE WELLS, fireman, and FRANK MURRAY, engineer, both of Fulton, Ill., were killed. One of the cars was loaded with horses, which were killed and maimed. The loss to the farmers is estimated at $150,000.
