Panama, IL Mine Explosion, Nov 1910

FIVE MEN KILLED IN MINE.

EXPLOSION IN THE WORKINGS NEAR HILLSBORO, ILL.

Hillsboro, Ill., Nov. 11. -- Five men are dead and eighteen injured as the result of an explosion in the mine of the Shoal Creek Coal company of Chicago, at Panama, twelve miles north of here, today.
Four of the men were killed outright, and the fifth died from injuries later. He was an Italian who was so badly mangled as not to be identified.
RASSEL ROMANIO, a miner, is still in the shaft.
The gas, which had accumulated over night in a pocket, several hundred feet from the mouth of the shaft, exploded shortly before 9 o'clock, tearing out the timbers and shaking the earth for miles around.
No serious fire followed. The men who escaped death were injured by falling slate and flames from the explosion.
About 300 men were at work in and about the mine at the time, most of them being outside, and away from danger. Fifty men in the entry of the shaft were rescued by the other miners.
The dead are:
GEORGE MANCHENNA.
J. WILBUR of Sorrento.
JACOB HERMAN of Sorrento.
JOE VERNERO of Panama.
One Unidentified Man.
Later reports from the mine are to the effect that ten men are still in the mine with little hope of rescuing them. The company denies this report.
