Chicago, IL Elevated Train Accident, Dec 1895

COULDN'T CHECK THE TRAIN.
ACCIDENT ON CHICAGO METROPOLITAN "L" ROAD IN CHICAGO -- THREE MEN HURT.
Chicago, Dec. 24. -- Three persons were seriously injured in an accident on the Metropolitan "L" road at the terminus of the line, 48th and Harrison Streets, at 3:40 o'clock Monday morning. The iinjured are:
W. H. BRADY, motorman.
WILLIAM R. KING, conductor.
JOHN SCHILLER, passenger.
As the train neared the terminus the motorman discovered that he could not slacken the speed of the train owing to the brakes refusing to work. Before he could warn the conductor and the only passenger on board the motor went over the superstructure and plunged into the street 20 feet below. The rear end of the passenger car held to the track rails, the forward part resting several feet above the ground partially telescoped into the motor. The motor was badly wrecked. All three were unconscious when taken from the wreck.
