COLLISION ON THE ALTON.
ONE MAN KILLED AND SIX INJURED WHEN TWO TRAINS MET ON ONE TRACK.
St. Louis, Nov. 1. -- One man was killed and six others injured, one perhaps fatally, in a collision on the Chicago and Alton, near Mitchell, Ill., early today. The passengers received a shaking up, but none are seriously hurt.
GEORGE W. CORSON, mail clerk, Bloomington, Ill., was killed.
The injured are:
SYDNEY WEBSTER, engineer, arms and legs broken, injured internally.
GEORGE PERITAGE, fireman, arm broken.
J. W. MURPHY, mail clerk, Bloomington, Ill.
WILLIAM STEWART, mail clerk, Chicago.
R. P. HINES, mail clerk, Normal.
The collision occurred between passenger train No. 8 bound from Chicago to St. Louis and a freight train on a long curve near Mitchell. WEBSTER and his firemen, jumped as did also the engineer and fireman of the freight train. The engine of the freight crashed through the front of the mail car, telescoping it and injuring a number of clerks asleep in the car.
