Blackfoot, ID Truck And Auto Collision, June 1966

HEAD-ON COLLISION KILLS BLACKFOOT RACE DRIVER -- THREE TIME CHAMPION.

Blackfoot -- GARY V. HILL, well-known stock car racer of Blackfoot, was killed this morning in a head-on collision of his pickup with a loaded potato truck.
The accident occurred about 7:50 a.m. on a country road near Rose Road six miles north of Blackfoot.
TERRY J. TURPIN, 21, of 955 Curtis, Blackfoot, was driver of the large potato truck. He escaped serious injury although the vehicle was demolished when it left the road and rolled over. TURPIN was treated at Bingham Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.
HILL, 33, was father of four. His address was Route Four, Blackfoot.
Police said the collision occurred at the crest of a slight hill. HILL'S pickup was ripped apart, and the front wheels of the potato truck were knocked off by the impact. The large truck was owned by D and D Trucking Co.
HILL had been employed as a mechanic for M and L Farms, north of Blackfoot. He was president of Sportsman's Speedway, Blackfoot, and three times won the championship of the Pocatello Stock Car Racing Association.
Investigating officers were Bingham Deputy Larry Hultz, and state patrolmen Clarence Norris and Ray Rohrbacher.
