Puna, HI Whaling Bark Taramine Wreck, Feb 1892

Wrecked on the Sandwich Islands.

The steamer Mariposa brings news from Honolulu that the whaling bark Taramine was wrecked on the night of February 3 on rocks off the coast of Puna, Hawaii. Eighteen lives were lost, nineteen were saved. The vessel was almost broadside upon the rocks. The captain, first officer, boat header, boatswain, carpenter and the men tried to get away in one boat but were capsized in the surf and were never seen again. The second mate and a number of the crew tried to get away in another boat, but it was also lost. Those who clung to the wreck were saved next morning.
