Macon, GA Train Wreck, Jul 1906
Into Open Switch
Macon, Ga., July 23.- Train No. 16, of the Southern Railway, which left Atlanta at 6:15 this morning for Brunswick, dashed into an open switch as it was approaching the depot here this morning and crashed into several carloads of coal. The engine was badly damaged, as was the coal cars, but there was no damage to the passenger coaches.
J. L. Mitchell, a mail clerk of Atlanta, was the most seriously injured. He was bruised about the side.
John R. Cooper, the well-known criminal lawyer of Macon, who was a passenger on the train, was hit in the eye by flying coal and was badly hurt.
The train was in charge of Engineer C. H. Weakly and Conductor R. T. Hubbard, both of Atlanta; neither of these men were injured.
