Hortense, GA Train Derails, May 1912

AGENT'S MISTAKE CAUSES WRECK.

FOUR ARE INJURED WHEN TRAIN IS DERAILED AT HORTENSE, GA.

Jesup, Ga., May 5. -- (Special.) -- Southbound Southern train No. 18, Cincinnati to Jacksonville, was wrecked at Hortense this morning and four persons injured, one seriously.
They are:
A. K. VANEVERA, engineer, of Macon.
E. L. KNIGHT, fireman, of Jesup, seriously injured.
J. I. COLEMAN, mail clerk, of Atlanta, gash in head.
J. H. JAMES, colored, mail clerk of Atlanta, slightly hurt.
No passengers were injured.
The train was thrown off near the station by the rerailer, which was opened by mistake as the train reached it. C. L. SANDERS, relief agent, after seeing the result of his mistake, left the station on a run. He was located at Offerman, where he stated he was not going to return.
Steel cars on this train probably saved a heavy death list. The engine turned completely over. Before leaving the wrecked engine, the engineer shut off all steam, so that there would be no trouble for the workmen. Every car on the train was derailed, the mail car being carried some distance from the track. The injured were rushed to a Jesup hospital. A special was also ordered from Waycross, but was turned back before arriving at Hortense.
