A Little Girl's Leg Crushed Under a Car Wheel - Amputation Necessary.

ATLANTA, December 29, - This morning, about 12 o'clock, Lou Jessie Alford, the bright little twelve-year-old daughter of James Alford, a mechanic employed in the Georgia Pacific shops, had her left leg crushed by a freight car at the Simpson street crossing, and this afternoon the limb was amputated between the ankle and knee by Drs. Ray, Harris and Gaston.

The little girl, accompanied by a playmate of the same age, had been to the shops for the purpose of taking her father his dinner. When she reached the crossing on her way home, she found it blocked by a freight train. The companion of Jessie ran under the cars and made the crossing successfully. Jessie, however, was not so fortunate, and while passing under the car a switch engine backed down on the train with a considerable jolt. Jessie was knocked down and a moment later one of the wheels of the cars passed over her leg, and crushed it badly. The injured child was picked up by friends and carried to her home, only a short distance away, and physicians were called in who amputated the lime as already stated. The attending physicians say that the child is not otherwise injured and will get well.
