Athens, GA Baby Killed by Falling Crossties, Apr 1911

BABY’S LIFE CRUSHED OUT BY FALLING TIES

Father Sat Thirty Feet Away Unconscious of Heart-Breaking Tragedy.

Athens, Ga, April 18 – One of the most shocking deaths in Elbert County was that yesterday afternoon of the little two-and-one-half-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Tucker, who was crushed to death under a heavy cross tie. The mother was busy in the house, the father was on the verandah talking to Rev. George Stone, of Athens. The little tot ran into the porch and showed the father and the preacher her new dress. She tripped lightly round the house in the yard. The preacher left for his appointment at the church and Mr. Tucker went into the house to see if his wife was ready to go and to call the baby.

The search for the baby located her crushed to death under a pile of crossties which had slid down over her, pinning her to the ground and crushing out her breath. The accident occurred in thirty feet of where the father and the minister had been sitting and they had heard no cry from the baby. The parents are heartbroken.
