Lumpkin, GA Train Wreck, Aug 1908

Ran Into Death Trap.

Americus, Ga., Aug. 25.----Seaboard passenger train No. 74, from Montgomery to Americus, was wrecked Monday morning at 1 o'clock near Lumpkin, resulting in the killing instantly of Engineer O. J. Gilstrap and his negro fireman, McKenzie, both being residents of Americus, Ga.

The track had been undermined by torrential rains, falling a few hours previously, and, without receiving the slightest warning. Engineer Gilstrap drove his locomotive into the death-trap.

The locomotive turned completely over, catching the unfortunate engineer and fireman, pinioning them beneath and mutilating them considerably. Their remains were brought to Americus.

Engineer Gilstrap is survived by his wife and five little children. He was thirty-five years old, and had practically grown up in the employ of the Seaboard railway.
