4 Navy Airmen Die In Crash Over Atlantic
Jacksonville, Fla. (AP)-Four Navy airmen were killed in the collision of two planes over the Atlantic Ocean shoreland near here Friday.
All four were on a Navy photo reconnaissance plane which collided with a Cougar jet fighter. The jet pilot Lt. (J.G.) DAVID MCCULLEY, 24, of Garden City, N.Y., parachuted and was unhurt.
Victims Identified
The Navy identified two of the dead as Lt. EMILE W. NAGELS, 30, and Lt. GEORGE A. DE SAULLES, 28, both of Jacksonville. The other two were identified tentatively as ROBERT W. SAMUELS, 22, and DONALD G. MUICHLER, both enlisted men from Jacksonville.
Apparently neither pilot was the other plane.
When MCCULLEY parachuted into the surf about 100 yards offshore and waded in, his first words we “What did I hit?â€
JOHN W. PRITCHETT, a motorist, said the jet seemed to hit the rear of the photo plane and cut off its tail. He said the photo plane burst into flame.
It smashed to bits on the ocean beach of Little Talbot Island State Park about 20 miles northeast of Jacksonville.
The jet fighter fell into the ocean about a mile farther north.
