Hillsborough Inlet, FL Steamer Mississippi Wreck, Aug 1871

ANOTHER WRECK ON THE COAST.

The Steamer Mississippi Lost at Hillsborough Inlet – The Passengers and Crew Rescued.

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 30 – The steam-ship Cortez, Capt. WHITMAN, arrived at South West Pass, this evening, bringing the crew and passengers rescued from the steam-ship Mississippi, wrecked on the 29th inst., in a hurricane off Hillsborough Inlet, Florida. All on board were saved, but the vessel and cargo are probably a total loss. The Mississippi, Capt. HENRY, sailed from New York for New Orleans Aug. 19, with full cargo of assorted merchandise, mostly dry goods and shoes, valued at $500,000. The vessel is Clyde-built, of the Merchant's line, and belonged to WM. F. WELD & Co., of Boston. She was classed at “A 1,” and valued at $150,000.
