Tampa Bay, FL Coast Guard Plane Crash, June 1936
FIND BODY OF COAST GUARD OFFICER IN WRECKED PLANE.
AMPHIBIAN TAKES PLUNGE INTO TAMPA BAY;
TWO OF OTHER MEN HAVE NOT BEEN LOCATED.
St. Petersburg, June 15. -- (AP) -- Coast Guard amphibian plane on storm patrol duty plunged into Tampa Bay near here today.
The body of Lieutenant CHARLES MARTIN PERROTT was found jammed in the wreckage.
Divers saw no trace of Radioman WALTER O. MORRIS and Aviation Mechanic WILLIAM D. EUBANK, who, it is believed, may have been thrown clear of the plane. Little hope is entertained
that they may have saved themselves.
Coast Guard craft found their grappling equipment unequal to the task of raising the plane from 14 feet of water, so awaited the arrival of a marine crane.
What caused the craft to crash is unknown, but officers expressed the belief that the pilot was unable to land on the choppy bay, after engine trouble developed.
The bay was rough because of tropical storm, which passed to the southward last night.
All were married men with children and resided in St. Petersburg.
Wreckage of the plane was located about 2.07 miles east of the St. Petersburg Coast Guard radio station.
The plane left the station at 7:02 A.M., and lost radio communication at 7:21. The plane is believed
to have plunged into the bay about 8:15.
