Niagara On the Lake, ON Strathcona Hotel Fire, Aug 1909
STRATHCONA HOTEL BURNS
Women Guests in the Water Have Only Bathing Suits Left.
NIAGARA ON THE LAKE, Aug. 26.---The Strathcona Hotel, one of the landmarks on the frontier and just outside the town limits, caught fire at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon and burned to the ground. The building and everything in it were destroyed. The loss, including property of guests, will be about $25,000.
The fire started in the basement from an undiscovered causes and spread rapidly. Fortunately, there were very few guests on the second and third floors of the house, and they, with the twenty house servants, escaped. The other guests, who numbered, possibly, fifty, were in bathing, or on the golf links or tennis courts at the time of the fire. They have left to-night just what they wore.
Several women are still attired in bathing suits. The guests found beds in the private cottages scattered about the Chautauqua grounds.
