FORTY PEOPLE KILLED AND FIFTY INJURED

Disastrous Wreck On Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Near Washington City, D. C.

ENGINE PLOWED THROUGH TRAIN

While the Crowded Frederick Express Was Standing at the Terra Cotta Station an Extra Train of "Dead" Cars Plunged Into it From the Rear.

WASHINGTON, D. C., Dec 31.-The total number killed in the rear collision on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad at Terra Cotta, D. C., a block station three miles from Washington, last night is estimated this morning at about forty and the number of injured at fifty.

The wreck was caused by an engine drawing eight empty cars running into local No 66, known as the Frederick express, just as the passenger train pulled out from the station bound for this city.

Engineer HILDEBRAND, who was in charge of the "dead" train, and who was arrested shortly after the disaster, declares that on account of a dense fog he was unable to distinguish the signal light at Takoma Park block station.

Tower Operator PHILLIPS declares the danger signal was in its proper place and that Engineer HILDEBRAND's train passed the lower station going at a speed from fifty to sixty miles per hour.
