TEN CENT STORE FIRE IN WASHINGTON CITY
FORTUNATELY OCCURS WHEN PLACE WAS NOT PACKED BY CUSTOMERS.
Washington, Dec. 24,--Five firemen were injured, two seriously, in a fire which caused $100,000 loss early today to the American five and ten-cent store at 314-316 Seventh street. A general fire alarm was sounded, since the store is in the center of the down-town shopping district, but firemen prevented any spread of the blaze.
The firemen, all of No. 6 company, were injured from falling beams and debris. All will recover. Dr William L Kelly, and emergency hospital interne, braved death from falling timbers to get to the men, all of whom were imprisoned by debris, and administer morphine to stop their sufferings.
The department store was stocked full of inflammable material and burned like tinder. The origin of the blaze is unknown.
