Washington, DC Knox Warehouse Fire, Jul 1894
EXPLAINS THE KNOX HORROR.
Experiments with a Gasoline Motor said to Have Caused the Fire.
WASHINGTON, July 27.----W. T. Harris, and inventor, was arrested last night on suspicion of having caused the disastrous Knox fire. He was in the building when the fire started, working at an old gasoline motor which he kept there and was badly burned. He was seen by several persons as he ran out of the building and then he disappeared.
The police believe that while working about the gasoline motor he caused the explosion which burned the building. He was taken to the Emergency hospital, where he now is in charge of an officer. His left hand and arm are seriously burned and his throat and lungs are sore from inhaled flames. He acknowledges he was in the building at the time the fire started, but denies he did anything to cause it.
Harris' statements do not agree with statements made by A. L. Kingsbury, the company's private watchman, who turned in the alarm. Neither of the statements can be fully explained by the police. A thorough investigation is now in progress.
