Gordon Heights, DE train wreck, Oct 1894

TRAIN STRIKES A POWDER WAGON.

A Horse Killed, the Driver Injured, but the Powder Did Not Explode.

CHESTER, Penn., Oct. 2. - The passengers on board of the New-York and Washington express train on the Pennsylvania Road due in this city at 10:20 this morning had a remarkable escape from serious injury and perhaps death. The train struck one of the Dupont powder wagons near Gordon Heights, killed one of the horses, seriously and perhaps fatally injured the driver, and scattered one-pound cans of powder in various directions without an explosion.

The wagon was on its way to the powder company's wharf, and it seems miraculous that the powder did not explode, in which event the train would probably have been wrecked. The driver was brought to this city and placed in the hospital. He was unable to give his name, and could not give any information about the accident.
