Dewey Beach, DE Dupont Mansion Burned, May 1950

DUPONT HOME FIRE WRECKED.

Dewey Beach, Del., May 20 (AP) -- A fire and explosion wrecked the $200,000 ocean front summer home of LAMMOT DUPONT, JR., here last night.
The mansion, one of the showplaces of this resort, was reduced to ruins within an hour. Only three brick walls and the porch were standing today.
DUPONT is a member of the famed Delaware family of industrialists.
Five volunteer firemen suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze.
Chief DONALD PALMER of the nearby Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department said many thousands of dollars worth of furnishings were destroyed.
All of the front windows and some of the doors of the brick and stucco mansion were blown out by the blast, which Chief PALMER said apparently was in the oil fired furnace.
No one was in the house at the time.
