ONE INSANE PATIENT BURNED -- OTHERS TAKEN FROM FLAMES BY FORCE.

South Windham, Conn., April 6. -- One woman, MRS. LAURA BACKUS, an insane patient, lost her life in a fire which destroyed the Grand View sanitarium here early today. All the other patients were taken out of the building, without harm, although there was no time to clothe them. The sanitarium was a three story frame structure, formerly used as a summer hotel, but of late years conducted as a private hotel, for dipsomaniacs. There were sixteen patients in the house and several of them had to be removed by force. One man refused to leave his room on the third floor and was taken out a window and down a ladder after a hard struggle. MRS. BACKUS, who had been taken frrom her room and left in a lower hall could not be found, and the house physician believes she rushed upstairs again and was burned. She was a town charge of Windham and was being kept at the sanitarium until she could be admitted to the insane hospital at Norwich.
The loss is placed at $2,000.
