Norwalk, CT Train Wreck, May 1853 - 52 Deaths
THE AWFUL DISASTER.---We are called upon to-day to record the most awful and fatal disaster that has ever visited the county, full details of which will be found in another part of this issue. The papers are filled with the sad incidents, and all hearts seem palled by the terrible event. Thousands have crowded to the scene to the disaster, and thronged the depots in the cities and villages on the route, to witness the arrival of the slain, or to greet with double joy those who escaped. Up to the date of our last intelligence, 52 dead bodies had been recovered, most of whom came to their death by drowning, and several of which had not been indentified.
It is hoped that this wholesale sacrifice will result in some efficient action, all over the land, for the security of human life upon our railroads, and for such pains and penalties against the appointment of incompetent men to the management of the trains, as will for the future afford some guaranty of safety to the unsuspecting traveler.
