Yalesville, CT Train Wreck, Feb 1916
ENGINES PISTON ROD SNAPS.
Accident to New Haven Express Alarms 200 Passengers.
Special to The New York Times.
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Feb. 23.---While swinging through Yalesville, a village in Wallingford, just south of Meriden, tonight, train No. 53 on the New Haven Railroad, and express running from Boston to New York and due to New York at 9 o'clock, had a narrow escape from derailment and 200 passengers became alarmed, in view of the Milford wreck.
The pistonrod on one of the locomotive's cylinders suddenly snapped in two, and before the engineer could stop his train, it bumped along for a quarter of a mile, ripping up the ties and road-bed. Some of the women passengers became hysterical. The engine stayed on the rails, and after delay the whole train was run back to Meriden, where another engine was submitted and the trip to New York resumed about two hours behind schedule.
The New Haven officials at once began, a rigid investigation and experts went to Meriden to examine the damaged piston rod, which had been inspected recently and pronounced in good condition.
