Jewett City, CT Hotel Fire, Jul 1878

THE FIRE OF 1878.

Two years later, on July 4, 1878, the hotel of Ira F. Lewis, which stood on the site of the present fine brick hotel on Railroad Avenue, was entirely destroyed by fire. A short time before, Daniel S. Anthony, for the protection of his own private residence, had built a small fire engine worked by hand brakes. In the account of the hotel fire published in the Norwich Aurora of July 12, it is said--- "had it not been for the small engine of Mr. Daniel S. Anthony the fire must have been as disastrous as the fire of February, 1876."
