Eight Persons Injured in Chemical Plant Blast
Eight Persons Injured in Chemical Plant Blast
NORTH HAVEN, Conn -- Eight persons were injured, two critically, when an explosion blew out the front of a two-story brick building at the Carwin Chemical Co. plant early today.
The injured were taken to the hospital of St. Raphael and the Grace-New Haven hospital in nearby New Haven.
The injured men were part of a 13-man night shift.
Arthur Thomas, night shift foreman was trapped on the second floor when the fire broke out immediately after the blast. He escaped by jumping from a window. The fire was quickly extinguished.
Thomas said he believes the explosion was caused by fumes which seeped into the 100-foot long building from a mixing vat outside the building.
