LARGE FIRE IN HARTFORD.

Office and Factory Buildings Burned and Hotel Guests Frightened.

HARTFORD, Conn., March 29.---A loss of $180,000 was caused by a fire which occurred this morning and completely gutted the James L. Howard office building, at Union Place and Asylum Street, the James L. Howard Company's factory building in the rear, and damaged by fire and water several adjoining buildings. The fire started from some unknown cause in a grocer's shop.

Guests in Heins Brothers' Hotel, on the east of the office building, were thrown into a panic, but escaped from the hotel without injury.

The individual losses are: James L. Howard Company, loss on buildings, stock, and machinery, $150,000; insurance, $105,000; Kendrick Kinglsey, grocer, $8,000; insurance, $5,000; A. D. Worthington & Co., book publishers, $10,000; no insurance; Henry Suther, mechanical expert, $2,500; insurance, $1,000; Root & Steimetz, ornamental house furnishings, $3,500; insurance, $2,700; Hartford Mantle Company, $1,500; insured; A. G. King & Co., heating contractors, $1,000; insured. Several other tenants suffered nominal losses. No one was injured.

Takes Place of Lawyer Lost in Fire.

Justice Scott, in the Supreme Court, yesterday signed an order substituting Richard H. Smith for Alexander B. Johnson as counsel in a suit brought by William Scholle against Albert Scholle and others. The substitution was made upon an affidavit filed by Edward H. Hallman, a clerk in the law office of Mr. Johnson, in which Mr. Hallman declares that he believes that his employer was lost in the Windsor Hotel fire. Mr. Johnson had been living at the Windsor for several weeks, and telephoned his club from the hotel on the afternoon of the fire to send him some papers. He occupied a room in the second floor.
